Experts: Pollution standards not enough to protect North Texans

State officials promised last month that by 2009, federal, state and local measures would combine to help protect people from breathing unsafe levels of lung-scarring ozone. For the first time, the region would meet one of the nation's most important public-health goals.

But a mountain of medical evidence shows that even if the plan achieved the promised pollution cuts, it would still allow pollution levels that researchers know to be unhealthy.

Groups sue to block new TXU coal-burning plant near Waco

Two groups sued Dallas-based TXU in federal court Friday to stop the company's plan for a new coal-burning power plant near Waco.

The suit alleges that TXU's permit application for the proposed two-unit Oak Grove plant in Robertson County violates the federal Clean Air Act. The act requires studies of pollution impacts and a consideration of cleaner technology that the permit does not contain, according to the suit.

Lawmakers say slow down on coal plants

The legislative session hasn’t started yet, but opposition is forming around plans to build a massive fleet of coal-fired power plants.

Twenty-five of those who will have votes in the coming legislative session on Monday signed a letter to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

White House Outlines Global Warming Fight

Technology and Voluntary Cutbacks Urged

The Bush administration yesterday laid out a long-term "strategic plan" for using technology to curb the impact of global warming, reiterating its position that basic scientific research and voluntary actions can curb greenhouse gases linked to climate change.

Addressing complaints by environmentalists and some scientists that Bush has not done enough to cut the nation's emissions of such gases, Energy Secretary Samuel W. Bodman said the 244-page "Climate Change Technology Program Strategic Plan" promotes initiatives such as sequestering carbon dioxide before it enters the atmosphere and promoting hydrogen-powered cars.

President Clinton Launches Large Cities Climate Initiative

Some of the world's largest cities have pledged to take action to combat climate change under the umbrella of the Clinton Climate Initiative, launched Tuesday by former President Bill Clinton. A partnership between the Clinton Foundation and the Large Cities Climate Leadership Group, the initiative aims to take practical and measurable steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

China Makes Huge Breakthrough in Wind Power Technology

Chinese developers unveiled the world's first full-permanent magnetic levitation (Maglev) wind power generator at the Wind Power Asia Exhibition 2006 held June 28 in Beijing, according to Xinhua News. Regarded as a key breakthrough in the evolution of global wind power technology-and a notable advance in independent intellectual property rights in China-the generator was jointly developed by Guangzhou Energy Research Institute under China's Academy of Sciences and by Guanghua Zhongke Hengyuan Energy Science & Technology Co., Ltd.
